While we were down in Hatteras for my birthday, Sequoia surprised me with a wonderful birthday present...her first tooth. Colleen noticed that it was about to show up the night before and told me that almost certainly Sequoia would be sporting a toothy grin for my birthday.
That was pretty cool.

I know that both of these pictures have already made the blog ... but if you click on them and look closely at Sequoia's bottom gum line, you can see her first tooth showing through.
She now has at least one more right next to it and I suspect several more working their way out that we have not yet noticed.I have to admit that there have been a few sleepless nights associated with the arrival of her teeth - that part is not exactly magical. About 6 months ago a friend of mine was talking about things he remembered from when his grown daughter was in her first year and he mentioned that there was a period when she would just stand up in her crib at night screaming. The daughter who was also there said "My god, what was wrong with me???"
He said he did not know then and could not remember now, but I would bet anything that she was getting her toothy grin as well. On more than one occasion Sequoia has welcomed us into the nursery, standing in her crib screaming at the top of her lungs, letting us know that she'd rather be smiling.
Ah, it's good to know that we are not the first ones to go through this...
