West coast or bust...

Last week we headed out to Oregon to visit some old friends ... well friends we have known for quite awhile, not old friends....anyway -
Sequoia was worried when she heard that she did not have her own ticket and thought maybe she would stow away in one of our suitcases.

It is a very good thing that we explained to her that she would be riding for free in our laps since Delta managed to lose our luggage on the way out to Portland. It was bad enough waiting for her car seat to arrive from its little detour through Salt lake City.

Other than the lost luggage (which we got back around 1pm the next day) the flights went well and Sequoia did very good considering she was stuck in our laps for that long flight.

Friday afternoon we drove out along the Columbia Gorge for some quick sightseeing. We only had a few hours so we had to limit our trip to driving along the old scenic highway and looking at the falls and scenery from the car for the most part, although we absolutely would have loved to have had a few days to just go walking around there. It is an amazingly interesting piece of geology and geography.

Our stop at Multnomah Falls was nice since the normal tourist crowds were missing. We got to introduce Sequoia to both waterfalls and snow during that stop.

We also stopped at the Bonneville Dam to look at the fish hatchery and visit Herman the big old white Sturgeon that they have there. That is a huge fish these days but only about 50 years ago he would have been considered one of the smaller ones in the Columbia before they were fished almost to extinction.

It was cold and very windy along the gorge with winds blowing well over 60 mph according to the news - I guessed that the gust were over 80 up at Vista House when we were there. To keep Sequoia warm we wrapped her up in her snow-suit and ski hat combo ... pretty cute and very warm.

Her hat was not only adorable, but tremendously practical and effective.

This view from the Vista House along the historic highway was much harder to get than you would expect due to the howling winds. It was a beautiful start to what would turn out to be one of the nicest weeks we have spent in Oregon.

It's fun reading about your stay in the Portland area and we can both visualize it right along with you guys! We're glad you got to do at least a little sight-seeing along the gorge, the waterfalls and the snow, etc., must have been wonderful fun for you three.

Yes, Sequoia looked pretty darned cute, all wrapped up nice and snuggly warm in her snow suit and the hat from Aunt Peggy & Uncle Jeff!

We love you guys! Grandmom and Granddad
